I simply do not understand why people use ignorance as an insult. It makes me wonder if people who accuse others of being ignorant truly understand what they’re saying. Can everyone accused of being ignorant truly be as apathetic as they are made out to be?
Ignorance is the state in which a person lacks knowledge and is unaware of various issues in general. This should not be confused with being unintelligent, as one’s level of intelligence and level of education or general awareness are not the same. The word ‘Ignorant’ is an adjective describing a person in the state of being unaware.
I have no doubt that almost everyone should make a better effort to be informed than we usually do. But to what end? Who is to say that the information found will be anything less than propaganda? How is a person to sort through what is true, and what is altered. The best lies are the ones that sound true.
On a whole, I’d wager the “well-informed” are probably spouting falsities much more than they spread truth. So why are they any better off than the ignorant person who speaks neither truths or lies? It’s an odd perspective, I think, to believe that something is true simply because you believe it to be.
I think that’s what people struggle with within Christianity. Those on the outside believe Christians are people who have been duped, who have swallowed lies because someone else told them to. But that’s because they stand on the outside judging those on the inside. It would be like me, having no experience with African tribal culture, claiming them all to be morons for believing what the local shaman tells them is true. Until I have put my hand to the plow, until I have actually tested their beliefs against actual life, I would be the ignorant one. Not them.
This is why Christianity is different. Because it holds up under duress from life. Christianity leaves room for breathing and doubting and stretching, without ever compromising the Truth.
But that’s just an ignorant guy’s thoughts. So who knows?
